A deep dive into the life and work of Frida Kahlo from the perspective of photographer Nickolas Muray.
Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray at the Museo Storico della Fanteria provides a glimpse into the life and art of the legendary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, seen through the eyes of photographer Nickolas Muray.
Muray, an American photographer, had a years-long friendship and romantic relationship with Kahlo, and his photographs and correspondences are on display at this exhibition.

Kahlo’s life was defined by both immense personal struggle and artistic success. After a devastating tram accident in 1925 that left her with spinal injuries and lifelong pain, Kahlo began her career as an artist, and is now known as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
Muray’s photographs offer a unique and personal perspective on Kahlo, capturing moments of solitude, as well as with family members, and Muray himself. Alongside these photos, the exhibition includes personal letters exchanged between Kahlo and Muray, filled with declarations of love and profound emotion.

The exhibition also features several of Kahlo’s paintings, including her iconic self-portraits and some of her more abstract works. Visitors can also see 8 reconstructed dresses worn by Kahlo, as well as pieces of her distinct jewelry.
This exhibition is particularly significant as it marks the 100th anniversary of the tram accident that altered the course of Kahlo’s life and launched her career as an artist. By showcasing Muray’s photographs, Kahlo’s artwork, personal letters, and belongings, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look at the artist’s journey, from her early struggles to her rise as one of the most well known artists today.
“Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray” is open until July 20th and provides a unique opportunity to experience the life and legacy of one of the most celebrated and influential artists of all time. Through Muray’s lens and Kahlo’s own words, this exhibition offers an intimate portrait of a woman whose art and spirit continue to inspire the world.
