The Annual Florence Film Festival Opens October 2nd

The “Cinquanta Giorni di Cinema a Firenze” (50 Days of Cinema in Florence) is a significant and prestigious film event running from October 2 to December 13, 2024 showcasing the best of international cinema across nine unique film festivals.

This year will mark the fourth edition of the event that will be held at Cinema La Compagnia (Via Camillo Cavour, 50/R) –  the official “Casa del Cinema” of the Tuscany region. The event will include nine distinct festivals celebrating global cinema: including the FanHua Chinese Film Festival, Middle East Now, and France Odeon, among others. These festivals are to showcase a diverse array of films spanning from full-length documentaries to animated features. The over two-month-long event will include premieres, exhibitions, workshops, and performances, offering a deep dive into international cinema and culture.

This year’s lineup includes:

  1. FanHua Chinese Film Festival (October 2-6)
    Offering premieres and cultural workshops focusing on classic and contemporary Chinese cinema.
  2. Middle East Now (October 15-20)
    Highlighting pressing issues like climate change and war in the Middle East with combined films, documentaries, music, and art. This year’s theme is “Ecologies of Resistance.”
  3. France Odeon (October 29 – November 1)
    Celebrating French cinema, concentrating on artistic and social changes through films, exhibitions, and book presentations.
  4. Festival dei Popoli (November 2-10)
    Exploring creative and experimental cinema with masterclasses and workshops for emerging talents in documentary filmmaking. 
  5. Schermo dell’Arte Film Festival (November 13-17)
  6. Focusing on contemporary art films and documentaries while emphasizing young talent and new artistic expressions.
  7. Festival di Cinema e Donne (November 20-24)
    Showcasing international female filmmakers, this event promotes emerging directors and their works.
  8. Florence Queer Festival (November 27 – December 1)
    A platform for LGBTQIA+ cinema and culture, featuring a selection of films and talks addressing queer experiences.
  9. River to River Florence Indian Film Festival (December 5-10)
    Highlighting contemporary Indian cinema, featuring Bollywood and indie films, documentaries, and web series.
  10. N.I.C.E. for Irish Film Festa (December 11)
    A new addition this year, this festival will offer a selection of high-quality Irish films in collaboration with the Irish Film Festa.

The festival will conclude on December 13th with the prestigious “David Rivelazioni Italiane – Italian Rising Stars” award ceremony celebrating emerging Italian film talents.
