Elegance Café: Where the Jazz is Hot and the Gin is Cold
Once occupying a smaller spot along the Via Veneto, The Elegance Café jazz club has relocated to the more up and coming area of Ostiense and now holds its performances within a more spacious venue. Jazz enthusiasts Daria Venuto and Remo Proietto have renovated the old Al fellini theater on Via Francesco Carletti. The couple divides and conquers as Daria curates the music while Remo runs the in-house restaurant, fulfilling his passion for the kitchen in a much more expansive way than was possible in their previous location.
The theme of nightly performances changes depending on the day of the week, beginning on Tuesdays with shows aired live on Radio Città Futura, a channel with big coverage on the arts and music. On Wednesdays the focus is on jam sessions and featured musicians show off their improvisational skills. On Thursdays a selection of Rome’s top jazz artists fill the house. On Fridays Elegance Café embraces contemporary jazz and its synthesis with the flavors of soul and funk. On Saturdays big name artists are welcomed to the stage and on Sundays “big bands” with as many as twelve members take the floor.
The underground feel of the room is fitting for a jazz club: the experience is up-close and personal as there are only about eight to ten tables from which the audience can listen while enjoying cocktails made with some of the finest mixology techniques or a selection from the internationally influenced Italian menu.
The staff is very young but extremely professional and Rome’s acclaimed chef Gabriele Cordaro has put together a delicate yet satiating list of dishes of which include stand-outs such as Sea Bass ceviche, tonnarelli pasta with ricotta, lemon and truffles and roasted octopus with smoked mashed potatoes and leeks. There is even a USB charger at every table, a convenient accommodation that is certainly not to be found in most other venues and restaurants.
The space is clean and modern yet cozy and welcoming. The Elegance café puts on shows of high caliber and the creative variation in nightly themes leaves something for every jazzy taste and mood.
